ARCHITECTURE ST BARTH – ISSAYAH ST BARTH
This luxury rental estate with hotel service houses 4 interconnected villas with swimming pools and outbuildings (fitness, spa, cinema, etc.). Each villa can be marketed separately or in groups. The project is designed as a contemporary hamlet of “case à vent” (traditional huts on the windward coast where the project is located) connected by large outdoor carbets housing the common areas. The built foundations are treated like a folding and deformation of the earth’s crust, creating underground volumes and “troglodyte” swimming pools that are naturally cool thanks to the earth’s thermal inertia.
This project is above all a question: what is luxury today? Our answer, through this domain project, is that the answer is not, of course, marble and glittering gilt. It’s that freedom, communion and symbiosis with nature, once simple pleasures accessible to all, are now becoming the ultimate luxury. Undeveloped spaces are more valuable than developed ones. As part of this approach, the project preserves 55% of the plot as a natural zone. These preserved green spaces have also served as a nursery for the species present on site and will be replanted in the project. These areas preserve the site’s ecological continuity and hydrology, enabling the creation of a permaculture area. They also enable the production of fruit and aromatic herbs, as well as the management and reuse of on-site water.
This fierce determination is reflected in a composition based on interpenetration, extension and continuity between inside and outside – between natural and built elements. A desire to erase, blur and dilate the boundary between inside and outside, and thus to inhabit this boundary by being “neither inside nor outside”.
