GUEST HOUSE
MARIA SANTA TERESSA GUEST HOUSE
Program: Guest House Facade Renovation
Scope: Study
Year: 2019
Location: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Status: Unrealized

Bioclimatic renovation project, at the clear boundary where nature meets the urban environment. The Guest House Maria Santa Teresa, located on the hills of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is the perfect opportunity to apply our “Augmented Nature” Concept.

At the back of the project, the dense tropical forest shelters incredible fauna and flora. The Guest House building is actually a playground for monkeys (the establishment’s emblem) and local birds. There is a true symbiosis in this unique place where, on one side, the building and humans meet, and on the other, the tropical forest and its animals. We wanted to translate and perpetuate this idea into the context of the renovation of this project.

The building is adorned with vegetation, providing shade, and protecting the facades. This symbolizes the nature’s pressure that passes through the project right into its urban facade. This vegetative facade is complemented by a latticed wooden cladding, inspired by the weaving principles of Brazilian bracelets sold at the foot of the project and throughout the colorful Santa Teresa neighborhood.

On the terrace section, we have designed what resembles an open aviary, serving multiple functions: enhancing the urban flow along the street, providing shade for users, serving as a support for climbing vegetation, and doubling as a playground for animals. With this composition, the system is reversed, it is the inhabitants who are like “put in a cage” or at least sheltered. Nature can then reclaim its rights. Nature comes to protect the building from external aggressions such as the sun and the local climate.

An energy renovation project that allows ecological continuity through an existing building, while drawing inspiration from local culture. A manifesto project of our “Augmented Nature” concept.
