HOTEL
TROPICAL HOTEL
Program: Renovation and extension of the Tropical Hotel
Mission: General design + Visa
Client: HTC Company
Location: St Jean, St Barthelemy
Status: December 2021
Surface : 1161,5 m2

This project consists in the renovation, extension and elevation of the Tropical Hotel, a historic and emblematic establishment of the memory and landscape of St Barthelemy. This new 24-room hotel is based on the typology of the existing buildings and is structured around a green patio, the center of gravity of the composition and true identity of the place. The project includes a restaurant and two swimming pools.

Our work was centered on the memory of the place as a marker of the landscape and history of the Bay of St. Jean, to create an establishment that is both luxurious and family oriented; a cocoon open to the vegetation welcoming you in the center of the island. The transition between the communal garden and the room is made gradually by means of corridors and terraces that can be completely seized by the occupants. This makes it possible to extend the space dedicated to each room by projecting it in a double orientation towards the outside, enveloping the guest in nature.

The modular red wood louvered façades create shade and privacy, they give life to the building’s interior façade which evolves according to the hours and seasons. This echoes the humid tropical garden, a veritable living canopy sheltering the heart of the hotel’s life, but also participating in the reuse of water on site by absorbing water from the ground as well as that generated by the hotel’s users. This central garden, the keystone of the establishment, generates a microclimate that is dispersed into the outlying areas by the natural ventilation mechanisms put in place and therefore acts as an air conditioner, water treatment system and emblem of the place.
