INSTITUT MÉDICO-EDUCATIF & MAISONS D’ACCUEIL SPÉCIALISÉES COMPETITION
Programme : Institut Médico-Educatif & Maison d’Accueil Spécialisées
Mission : General design
Project director : Groupe SOS
Location : Saint Martin
Status : Competition
Budget: 10 M€
Size: 2 350 m2

The goal of this project is to create a shell, a cocoon, in which one feels comfortable, at home, protected, and sheltered. A place where one can really live. To meet that objective, this project was conceived around the principles of conviviality and exchange, yet respecting the privacy of those in assisted living. The project is articulated around a central, modulable space that we call the patio.

The project can be deconstructed into three large, distinct entities: The private living spaces; the infrastructures related to daily activities for everyone; and the support system needed for the proper functioning of the complex. Each of these entities is articulated around a central exterior space that is both a distribution center and a place where activities can take place. The project that we envision is inspired by local construction techniques and a Caribbean lifestyle, where one tends to live outside as much as possible. With this in mind, each distinct area is extended with accessible exterior spaces. The overhangs of the roof protect the façades and exteriors passageways from the sun and bad weather, allowing comfortable conditions throughout the year.

The overhangs of the roof protect the façades and exteriors passageways from the sun and bad weather, allowing comfortable conditions throughout the year.

The Patio, created to meet several objectives:
➢ Create an exterior space accessible to everyone; secured, so that it allows a certain level of autonomy to those who use it.
➢ Create a microclimate at the center of the project, assuring coolness by the use of vegetation and air circulation via openings in the construction.
➢ Generate interior and exterior views and perspectives for all of the buildings.
➢ Create a space for activities and a common living space in the heart of the project.
➢ Create green space to add to the comfort of the residents.
➢ It is also a public space, for activities and events, (theatre, sports, music, etc…)

A central element to consider in terms of the operation of the project is that, above all, it is a place to live, a place for people to meet, and a place for shared experiences A place for communal events and activities. With this in mind, the
structure can be separated and divided into two or three distinct, independent zones, according to the needs of the program and future needs of the complex.
This fragmented architecture, articulated around a single exterior space, facilitates the orientation and appropriation of different areas in a controlled, secure, and reassuring manner for people needing assistance. Basically, each entity is directly accessible and visible from the patio. This simplifies the orien¬tation and circulation of the people using the spaces.
